Hyundai has unveiled a rugged new take on its electric vehicle (EV) with the Kona Mauna Loa edition, a special variant limited to just 30 units exclusively for the Japanese market.
Named after Earth’s largest active volcano, the Mauna Loa edition features significant exterior modifications, including scratch-resistant black paint covering the front bumper, side sills, and rear bumper. The vehicle sports a distinctive “Mirage Green” paint job, complemented by what Hyundai calls a “Wild & Tough Black Paint” treatment that gives the SUV a textured, utilitarian appearance reminiscent of 1990s base models.
In terms of performance, the Mauna Loa edition retains the impressive capabilities of the standard Kona EV. It features a 64.8 kWh battery capacity, delivering a WLTP driving range of up to 625 km (388 miles). The vehicle measures 4,355 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, and 1,590 mm in height, with a slightly increased height of 1,585 mm when equipped with the roof rack.
The outdoor-focused upgrades for the Mauna Loa edition include several enhancements designed to improve bothperformance and aesthetics. According to Hyundai, notable features include Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires in size 205/65 R16, along with custom matte black Weds wheels in a smaller 16-inch size.
Moreover, the EV also comes equipped with front and rear mudguards, black window trim, and dark badges. Additionally, it features a standard roof rack system and black molding along the windows, emphasizing its rugged, adventure-ready appeal.
Inside, the Mauna Loa edition offers a blend of practicality and luxury. The cabin is outfitted with new “Sage Green” two-tone leather seating that is accented with yellow details. For convenience, the interior includes easy-to-clean rubber floor mats and an all-weather cargo mat, ensuring durability during outdoor adventures. Optional accessories, such as folding chairs and storage pockets, enhance the utility of the vehicle, while seat-back storage solutions provide added organization.
Priced at 4,950,000 yen (around $32,500), the Mauna Loa edition is positioned between the N-Line and Lounge trim levels in Hyundai Japan’s lineup, offering a unique combination of features for outdoor enthusiasts.
Sales of the Kona EV Mauna Loa will begin on October 25 in Japan, marking Hyundai’s latest effort to blend electric mobility with outdoor adventure capability, albeit in an extremely limited production run.
