Hyundai and Waymo have officially announced a multi-year strategic partnership that aims to merge Hyundai’s expertise in electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing with Waymo’s autonomous driving technology.

IONIQ 5: The Face of Autonomous EVs

According to Hyundai, this partnership involves Hyundai’s award-winning all-electric SUV, the IONIQ 5. This EV will be equipped with Waymo’s sixth-generation fully autonomous technology, known as the Waymo Driver. The integration of these two advanced technologies is set to create a fleet of vehicles that will play a pivotal role in expanding Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One.

“Hyundai’s focus on sustainability and strong EV roadmap makes them a great partner for us as we bring our fully autonomous service to more riders in more places,” said Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo.

Made in America

The IONIQ 5 vehicles destined for the Waymo fleet will be produced at Hyundai’s state-of-the-art EV manufacturing facility, the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), located in Georgia. This new plant, set to open as early as this month, symbolizes Hyundai’s commitment to EV production and sustainable manufacturing practices in the United States.

José Muñoz, president and global COO of Hyundai Motor Company, emphasized the readiness of the new facility, stating, “The team at our new manufacturing facility is ready to allocate a significant number of vehicles for the Waymo One fleet as it continues to expand.”

Timeline and Expectations

The partnership between Hyundai and Waymo is set to roll out in stages over the next few years. Initial on-road testing of Waymo-enabled IONIQ 5 EVs is expected to begin by late 2025. After successful testing and receiving regulatory approvals, these autonomous vehicles will be gradually integrated into the Waymo One service. The companies also plan to produce a significant fleet of IONIQ 5s equipped with Waymo’s self-driving technology, expanding Waymo One’s operations over multiple years.

Inside, the IONIQ 5 offers a spacious interior, providing ample legroom, headroom, and cargo space to ensure a superior experience for passengers. Combined with its long driving range, the IONIQ 5 is an ideal candidate for autonomous ride-hailing services.

A Shared Vision for the Future

This partnership aligns with both companies’ visions for the future of mobility. Hyundai recently announced the launch of its autonomous vehicle foundry business, aiming to provide vehicles capable of implementing SAE Level 4 or higher autonomous driving technology to global customers.

Chang Song, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “There is no better partner for our first agreement in this initiative than industry-leader Waymo.”

Implications for the Automotive Industry

The Hyundai-Waymo partnership represents a significant milestone in the convergence of EV technology and autonomous driving systems. As these EVs begin to roll out in the coming years, they are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of autonomous electric mobility.

As the world watches this partnership unfold, it is clear that the road ahead for autonomous EVs is not just a possibility, but an imminent reality that Hyundai and Waymo are actively shaping.
