Hyundai is shaking up its electric vehicle (EV) strategy for the United States (U.S.) market, with plans to introduce an extended-range EV (EREV) version of its popular Santa Fe SUV and new EV pickup trucks.

According to the Korea Economic Daily, Hyundai is developing a next-generation powertrain system for EREV, which combines an electric motor with a fuel-based power unit to extend the EV’s driving range. This setup includes an electric generator that charges the battery, allowing for longer journeys without the need for extensive charging infrastructure.

“It is still years before we see an affordable EV equipped with batteries that can travel 1,000 km on a single charge,” an industry official told the Korea Economic Daily. “EREVs will be competitive for at least ten years before the arrival of the EV era.”

Moreover, the Santa Fe and the Genesis GV70 are projected to be the first models to receive Hyundai’s new EREV powertrain within the next two to three years. The technology will then be introduced to the next generation of Hyundai and Kia pickup trucks, which are aimed for production in 2028 or 2029.

These EV pickup trucks are expected to have a driving range of over 530 km (330 miles). Notably, Hyundai currently sells the Santa Cruz pickup, but it has struggled to make a strong impact, with sales down 10% so far this year.

With Hyundai’s planned EREV offerings, the company aims to provide buyers with the benefits of electric driving that provide enhanced range and expansion of its foothold in the global market. As its strategic move into EREVs could give the automaker a competitive edge in the SUV and pickup truck segments, its success will be determined depending on buyer demands and preferences.
