GMC Hummer X Concepts Take Aim at Bronco and Wrangler Territory

GMC unveiled a pair of striking Hummer X concepts that imagine a future where the Hummer brand moves beyond massive electric trucks and SUVs into smaller, more agile off-road vehicles. Developed by GM’s Advanced Design studio in Pasadena, California, the Hummer X Truck and X SUV concepts explore what a midsize electric off-roader could look like if it were designed to compete directly with icons such as the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.

While GM emphasized that the concepts are purely design studies with no production plans attached, they offer an intriguing glimpse into how the Hummer brand could evolve in the future.

Hummer X concepts envision smaller electric off-roaders

The concepts represent a dramatic departure from today’s oversized Hummer EV lineup. Both vehicles are significantly smaller and lighter in appearance, with dimensions much closer to the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.

The Hummer X SUV is the more radical of the two designs, featuring removable roof elements, a rear-mounted spare tire, and proportions aimed squarely at hardcore off-road enthusiasts. Riding on 37-inch tires with 13.2 inches of ground clearance, the concept boasts approach and departure angles that rival or exceed many dedicated off-road vehicles currently on sale, according to MotorTrend.

Meanwhile, the Hummer X Truck adopts a more traditional pickup format while maintaining aggressive off-road geometry. Measuring roughly the size of a midsize pickup, the concept pairs 35-inch tires with short overhangs and independent suspension designed to maximize trail capability.

Both concepts feature design cues inspired by existing off-road icons while retaining signature Hummer styling elements such as squared-off bodywork and distinctive lighting treatments.

Sustainability and modular design play key roles

Beyond off-road capability, the concepts also showcase GM’s interest in sustainability and repairability.

Designers incorporated recycled materials throughout the interior, including seatbacks and dashboard components made from shredded automotive fascia materials. The team also reduced reliance on adhesives in favor of clips and fasteners, making components easier to remove, repair, reuse, and recycle.

Although GM has not disclosed powertrain details, the concepts appear to utilize an electric architecture similar to the current Hummer EV lineup, likely featuring an underfloor battery pack and dual-motor setup.

The concepts arrive at an interesting time for the Hummer brand, which has faced slower-than-expected sales despite generating significant attention following its electric revival.

While production versions remain unlikely for now, the Hummer X concepts suggest GM designers are actively exploring whether smaller, more affordable, and more maneuverable electric off-roaders could eventually complement the brand’s flagship EV lineup.
