General Motors says it has no plans to cancel the Chevrolet Silverado EV or GMC Sierra EV, even as rival automakers scale back their electric truck ambitions. While the U.S. EV pickup segment remains relatively small, GM executives and analysts point to the company’s shared platform strategy as a key reason its battery-powered trucks are staying put.
Unlike competitors that have paused or scrapped electric pickup programs, GM integrated its EV trucks into a broader architecture strategy. The Silverado EV, Sierra EV, and GMC Hummer EV are built on the company’s BT1 platform, sharing battery modules, motors, and core components.
That scale matters. Sam Abuelsamid, vice president at Telemetry, told the Detroit Free Press that dropping one model would raise costs for the others because of shared parts and production infrastructure. S&P Global Mobility analyst Stephanie Brinley similarly noted that significant savings would be difficult to achieve by eliminating a single nameplate, according to GM Authority.
In 2025, GM sold 11,275 Silverado EVs and 7,996 Sierra EVs. While those figures trail far behind traditional gasoline Silverado sales, Chevrolet Communications Director Shad Balch said there are “no specific sales objectives tethered to the truck’s longevity, and no plans to cut production at this time.”
Balch highlighted the Silverado EV’s capabilities, including up to 493 miles of range, towing capacity of up to 12,500 pounds, and payload capacity of up to 1,800 pounds.

Analysts caution that sustaining production at relatively modest volumes can be challenging if profit margins are thin, particularly in the capital-intensive full-size truck segment. Still, GM appears committed to its EV truck roadmap.
The automaker recently expanded the Silverado EV lineup with LT, Trail Boss, and RST trims, including a special Stars & Steel Collection edition marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. Production continues at Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck, even if currently operating on a single shift.
For now, GM’s electric pickups remain central to its broader electrification push. With shared engineering and manufacturing deeply embedded across multiple models, the Silverado EV and Sierra EV are positioned as long-term players rather than short-term experiments.
