GM Phases Out Cadillac XT4 To Make Way For New Chevrolet Bolt EV Lineup

In a move to accelerate towards electric vehicles (EVs), General Motors (GM) has announced that it will be retiring the gas-powered Cadillac XT4 SUV at its Kansas plant in January 2025 to clear the way for the introduction of the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Investment in New Bolt EV Production

The Cadillac XT4, the company’s cheapest SUV with a starting price of $41,990, has seen declining sales in recent years, down 12% through the first nine months of 2024 after a 28% drop in Q4 2023. This contrasts with GM’s plans to revive the popular, low-cost Bolt EV, which was previously phased out at the end of 2023.

According to Reuters, GM will now only build Bolt models on the Fairfax, Kansas assembly line, rather than the previous plan to produce both the XT4 and the new Bolt. This $390 million investment in the plant is part of GM’s broader strategy to bring back an “even better” next-generation Bolt EV, which will feature faster charging and new technology, including the use of LFP batteries – a first for an EV sold in the United States (U.S.).

Expanding the Bolt EV Family

GM’s president, Mark Reuss, has confirmed that the new Bolt EV will be part of a “family of Bolts,” suggesting there will be multiple variants, including a lower-priced model. While pricing for the new Bolt is expected to start slightly higher than the previous $28,785, GM CEO Mary Barra promises an “even better driving, charging, and ownership experience” for customers.

Paving the Way for an Electric Future

The decision to discontinue the Cadillac XT4 is part of GM’s broader shift away from traditional gasoline-powered cars in favor of crossovers, SUVs, and EVs. The company has already announced the end of production for the Chevrolet Malibu sedan this month, after selling over 10 million units since 1964 to pave the way for the Bolt EV.
