2024 is shaping up to prioritize affordable electric vehicles (EVs). Despite Tesla’s recent announcement of a $1,000 price increase for all Model Y EVs starting April 1st, they have been engaged in a price-slashing spree for over a year to measure with many other comapanies following them such as competitors like XPeng and Nio. Although Tesla managed to achieve a remarkable 30% auto gross margin in the fourth quarter of 2021, the ongoing chip shortages in the industry have caused them to dip below 20%. This shift signals a need for Tesla to make EVs more budget-friendly to remain competitive and adapt to the evolving EV market.

Last summer, XPeng unveiled plans to introduce a brand offering EVs at 50% lower prices. Now, they delivered on that promise. On Saturday, XPeng announced the imminent arrival of their more affordable EV models, slated to hit the market within the next month. These models are aimed at price points ranging between 100,000 yuan and 150,000 yuan, which converts to $14,000 to $21,000.

Meanwhile, Nio, the premium Chinese EV manufacturer, is also taking action. They are gearing up to launch their mass-market EV brand, named “Le Dao,” designed with families in mind. While Nio has predominantly catered to the premium market since 2014 with SUVs and sedans that could rival Tesla’s models, they are now setting their sights on a broader audience. Their first EV product is scheduled to roll out in the third quarter, with deliveries expected to ramp up quickly during the next one.

The push for more affordable EVs is driven by the need to attract a wider range of buyers to embrace EV adoption. Even Tesla has been discussing the prospect of a $25,000 EV model since 2020. Moreover, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk hinted at the release of a compact Tesla EV by 2025 earlier this year. As these deadlines loom on the horizon, it is evident that the EV industry is rapidly evolving toward greater affordability.
