Genesis is strategically expanding its electrified lineup, with a hybrid version of the GV80 SUV slated to debut before the anticipated fully electric model. This move reflects Genesis’ commitment to offering diverse powertrain options to its customer base.

Genesis GV80 Hybrid Development Update

The Genesis product plan now includes a hybrid GV80 variant, positioned between conventional and fully electric models. This development follows the successful introduction of the brand’s dedicated EVs while addressing different customer adoption timelines.

Technical specifications confirm the use of Hyundai Motor Group’s hybrid system, with the 2.5-liter engine serving as the internal combustion component. Engineering teams have completed calibration work to meet Genesis’ luxury performance standards while achieving measurable efficiency improvements.

Production timing aligns with the model’s mid-cycle enhancement schedule, allowing the hybrid to coexist with existing electrified offerings. This strategic addition provides dealers with a transitional option for clients evaluating electrification.

The fully electric GV80 is set to debut in early 2028 as part of the model’s redesign cycle. This timing aligns with Hyundai Motor Group’s production schedule for its new eM platform at the Ulsan manufacturing center.

Initial specifications confirm the platform’s 800V architecture enables faster charging than current Genesis EVs, while structural battery improvements increase range. The same architecture will later support the GV90, with engineers currently refining suspension tuning for Genesis’ luxury requirements.

Genesis’ Electrification Strategy in Motion

The introduction of a GV80 hybrid followed by a full EV aligns with Genesis’ goal of a fully electric lineup by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2035. This strategy allows Genesis to cater to a wider audience while progressing towards its ambitious electrification targets.

The upcoming GV80 hybrid offers Genesis customers a near-term opportunity to experience a more efficient SUV. The eventual all-electric GV80 will further solidify Genesis’ position in the luxury EV market.
