Shenzhen, city in southeastern China, reached a new achievement in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure with now having 362 supercharging stations according to Chinese authorities. This number exceeds the number of gas stations in the Shenzhen, which highlights the city’s relentless efforts towards electric mobility.
Known as BYD’s headquartered city, the acceleration of EV adoption in Shenzhen has been supported by a concerted effort to create a “city of superchargers” according to the city. The plan was initiated in June 2023, aimed to facilitate the burgeoning fleet of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the city. With NEV ownership surpassing 970,000 units by the end of 2023, constituting about 60% of the total vehicle count, the need for robust charging infrastructure became paramount.
Most of the new superchargers are strategically located in large business complexes, bus stations, and industrial parks. In addition, Shenzhen’s Development and Reform Commission predicts the number of superchargers will reach 1,000 by the end of 2024.
The increase in charging infrastructure also aligns with China’s goal towards electrification with NEV ownership overtook 20.41 million units at the end of 2023. Moreover, the NEV charging network saw a tremendous 65% year-on-year growth, reaching almost 8.6 million stations nationwide.
As for the United States (U.S.), the country is also experiencing a similar transformation in its charging landscape. Recent data from the US Department of Energy reveals a rapid expansion of fast EV charging stations, with nearly 600 new stations activated during Q1 2024 alone.

Particularly in California, the state now has 1 EV charging station for every 5 gas stations with around 105,000 public or shared private EV chargers. As a result, these efforts aim to address charger scarcity and enhance accessibility for EV drivers nationwide.

Tesla also is a contributor to the proliferation of charging stations in the U.S., with around one in every four fast chargers attributed to the company. Recognizing the importance of charger availability in driving EV adoption, Tesla continues to invest in expanding its charging network despite recent market fluctuations and operational challenges.
The widespread deployment of EV charging infrastructure marks a pivotal moment in the transition towards sustainable transportation. As EV chargers become as ubiquitous as gas stations, the obstacles in front of EV adoption will surely be cleared.
