BYD EV Survives Three Lightning Strikes With No Major Damage

A BYD Song Plus EV endured three consecutive lightning strikes while driving through the Tieshan service area in Beihai, Guangxi, China.

Fortunately, the driver and the BYD electric vehicle were not seriously harmed. Dashcam footage of the dramatic incident quickly spread across Chinese social media, showcasing the car’s resilience under extreme conditions.

Safety features protect the driver and the BYD EV’s systems

According to Chongqing Daily, a mechanic who inspected the BYD Song Plus EV hit by lightning found no damage to its power battery pack, motor, or electronic control system. The only visible marks on the EV were two small strike points on its roof. “This is the first time in my 12-year career that I have seen a vehicle struck by lightning,” the inspecting mechanic told local media.

BYD’s general manager of brand and public relations, Li Yunfei, confirmed on Weibo that the Song Plus EV withstood all three lightning hits without compromising occupant safety or core vehicle systems. The vehicle’s power cutoff protection system automatically engaged during the strikes, preventing electrical faults. The driver remained inside until rescue services arrived. A tow was later arranged.

Song lineup remains a BYD sales leader

The all-electric Song Plus is part of BYD’s Ocean series. It is priced in China between RMB 149,800 ($20,740) and RMB 175,800 ($24,480). Another model in the Ocean lineup is the Song Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid, which starts at RMB 135,800 ($18,910). Together, the Song lineup is BYD’s second-best-selling nameplate, with 59,026 units sold in July alone. BYD’s Song models include the Song L EV, Song L DM-i, and Song Pro DM-i.
