As BYD has been expanding its global footprint with its electric vehicle (EV) strategy in mind, the company is on the verge of finalizing a deal to construct a $1 billion manufacturing plant in Turkey.

According to Bloomberg, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to officially announce the agreement on Monday during a ceremony in Manisa province, the planned site for the new plant. Interestingly, the deal follows BYD’s ongoing construction of plants in Brazil, Mexico, and Hungary.

As a result, BYD’s plant in Turkey will enhance the company’s entry into the European market and enter Turkey’s EV market, which represented up to 7.5% of vehicle sales in 2023.

With the European Union (EU) recently implementing new tariffs of up to 38.1% on Chinese EVs with BYD facing a 17.4% rate, the new plant in Turkey could help the company circumvent these tariffs and gain easier access to the European market due to Turkey’s customs union agreement with the EU.

BYD’s Global Footprint

BYD has been making headlines with its global EV strategy. In terms of BYD’s global performance, the company’s Q2 2024 results showed 426,039 EVs sold, narrowly behind Tesla’s 443,956. As for recent developments, BYD further expanded its global footprint with its new EV plant in Thailand, marking the first one in Southeast Asia.

As of now, BYD’s new plant in Turkey will aim to strengthen its position in the global EV market. With production plants in key regions worldwide, BYD is set to accelerate its international growth and challenge global automakers in the EV industry.
