BYD’s newest electric SUV, the Sealion 06, is off to a fast start in China. Since its launch on July 24, the vehicle has sold 35,483 units, including 30,483 in August alone, according to Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean series sales division.

The strong demand has quickly positioned the Sealion 06 as a core contributor to BYD’s expanding Sealion lineup.

Sealion 06 lineup and specifications

The Sealion 06 is offered in both hybrid (DM-i) and all-electric (EV) variants, each with three trim levels. Pricing begins at RMB 139,800 ($19,560) for the hybrid and RMB 143,800 for the EV, with higher trims reaching RMB 163,800. The SUV measures 4,810 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,675 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm.

These dimensions put it slightly above Tesla’s five-seat Model Y in overall size, while offering a competitive price advantage, according to CNEV Post. The Sealion 06 joins other family members, including the Sealion 05 and Sealion 07, in both hybrid and EV form.

Sales momentum within the Sealion family

The Sealion 06’s quick start helped drive record results for the Sealion family in August. Combined sales for the lineup reached 53,279 units, making it BYD’s third-highest-selling vehicle group for the first time. The Sealion models accounted for 14.25 percent of BYD’s total new energy vehicle sales of 373,626 units last month. The Sealion 06 made up more than half of those sales, at 57.21 percent.

The Sealion 07 EV, the first in the family, was launched in May 2024, and the strong early reception of the Sealion 06 suggests BYD’s strategy of offering both hybrid and pure electric options across SUV segments is paying off. With its blend of aggressive pricing, competitive sizing, and rapid early adoption, the Sealion 06 appears poised to become one of BYD’s most important mass-market offerings in 2025.
