BYD unveiled the new DOLPHIN G DM-i for Europe, introducing a compact plug-in hybrid hatchback aimed directly at the region’s highly competitive B-segment market. The model combines BYD’s Super Hybrid DM technology with compact supermini dimensions, offering more than 1,000 kilometers of combined range while still supporting meaningful pure-electric daily driving.

The DOLPHIN G DM-i is expected to officially launch across European markets in June, with first customer deliveries scheduled for later this year.

BYD brings plug-in hybrid technology to Europe’s supermini segment

The DOLPHIN G DM-i marks the first vehicle BYD specifically developed for overseas markets including Europe, highlighting the company’s increasingly aggressive global expansion strategy.

Positioned in Europe’s popular B-segment category, the hatchback measures 4.16 meters long and 1.825 meters wide, placing it alongside mainstream compact models commonly used for urban commuting and family transportation, BYD stated in a press release.

Unlike most traditional superminis powered entirely by internal combustion engines, the DOLPHIN G DM-i uses BYD’s Super Hybrid DM system, pairing electric driving capability with a gasoline-powered hybrid setup designed for extended range.

BYD said the vehicle can operate as a pure EV for many daily driving scenarios while using its hybrid system to support longer trips. Combined range is expected to exceed 1,000 kilometers when the battery and fuel tank are fully utilized.

The company emphasized that the front-mounted electric motor delivers smooth acceleration and a driving experience closer to a battery-electric vehicle than a conventional hybrid.

BYD expands European ambitions as EV competition intensifies

The launch represents another major step in BYD’s effort to establish itself as a dominant force in Europe’s rapidly evolving EV market. The Chinese automaker has aggressively expanded its lineup across the continent over the past two years, introducing both fully electric and plug-in hybrid models aimed at mainstream buyers.

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li described the DOLPHIN G DM-i as an attempt to redefine customer expectations within the compact car category by combining long electric range, hybrid flexibility, and advanced digital features in an accessible package.

The strategy could help BYD appeal to European consumers who remain interested in electrified vehicles but still have concerns about charging infrastructure and long-distance travel limitations associated with fully electric cars.

The DOLPHIN G DM-i also arrives as Chinese automakers continue increasing pressure on legacy European brands through lower pricing, rapid product rollout cycles, and growing investment in battery and software technology.

BYD said full technical specifications and equipment details for the DOLPHIN G DM-i will be released closer to launch.
