The City of Boston has partnered with itselectric, a Brooklyn-based electric vehicle (EV) curbside charging company, focused on strongly expanding access to EV charging across the city as one of the first United States (U.S.) cities to implement public EV curbside charging.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu expressed the importance of this initiative stating, “As a city, we need to adapt to these changes for our residents and planet. I am grateful to our partners for helping us increase charging stations in our neighborhoods as we continue striving towards our goal of being the greenest city in the country.”

In details of the partnership, supported by the Boston Transportation Department, it will see itselectric deploying hundreds of Level 2 charging posts over the next five years. With the potential for additional expansion, this project arrives with itselectric’s innovative approach to installation and operation:

  • Zero-cost installation: The charging posts connect behind the meter to adjacent buildings, eliminating the need for utility permitting and cutting costs for property owners.
  • Revenue sharing: Property owners will receive a share of the revenue generated by each charger, creating economic benefits for the community.
  • Unique design: itselectric offers the only UL-certified detachable cable EV charger, prioritizing safety and urban aesthetics.

Nathan King, CEO and co-founder of itselectric, underlined the project’s focus on equity stating, “Our partnership with Boston is about more than just infrastructure; it’s about making sure all Bostonians, regardless of their neighborhood, can drive electric and actively participate in the transition to clean energy.”

Furthermore, the city is bringing a community-driven approach to determining EV charger locations, where residents and property owners can suggest locations through the city’s online survey or by signing up directly on itselectric website domain.

Notably, this initiative aligns with Mayor Wu’s commitment to ensuring every household in Boston is within a five-minute walk of a public EV charging station, reinforcing the city’s dedication to its Green New Deal promise.

With Boston setting a precedent for urban electric curbside charging in its city, this partnership addresses the need for accessible EV charging and demonstrates how cities can leverage private sector innovation to achieve their sustainability goals. By facing challenges for convenient charging, Boston is progressing the acceleration of EV adoption for its residents.
