Volvo’s EX90 electric vehicle (EV) is finally set to reach buyers, but the company is alerting that early deliveries may lack several important features. This setback arrives after production delays of over two years due to software issues.

Volvo has informed global buyers that certain functionalities in its EX90 SUV might not be available at delivery. These features include Apple CarPlay integration, bi-directional charging capabilities, and the EV’s advanced lidar safety system.

Volvo CEO Jim Rowan defended the decision to begin deliveries without these features stating, “The whole point of a software-defined vehicle that has over-the-air update capabilities is to continually upgrade that software.” Rowan expressed confidence that customers understand this approach and “will reap the benefits over time.”

Among the delayed features are two advanced driver assistance programs designed to improve safety at intersections, Siri voice command access for iPhones, and the ability to transfer excess energy from the EV to the home. In addition, early EX90 models may experience battery drainage issues when parked, potentially losing up to 3% of charge every 24 hours.

Despite these challenges, Volvo does not project an impact on sales and aims to add these aforementioned featuresthrough over-the-air (OTA) updates in the future, but no specific timeline has been provided. Notably, this report follows halting online orders for its smaller EX30 model with recent software-related issues, which faced a recall of nearly 72,000 units due to a software bug. The company has also delayed United States (U.S.) deliveries of the EX30 until 2025.

As Volvo maintains that the EX90 is still “the safest vehicle it has ever produced” despite the initial absence of some advanced features, the company’s approach of delivering EVs with the promise of future updates underlines both the potential and the challenges of this new period in EV technology.
