Volvo Cars has announced a new technological shift in its approach to electric vehicle (EV) development, with the upcoming EX60 mid-size SUV set to spearhead this new strategy.

According to Volvo, the company confirmed that the EX60, aimed for release in 2026, will be the first EV built on its new SPA3 platform, underpinned by the innovative Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. Moreover, at its Capital Markets Day in Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo revealed its “game-changing” tech strategy aimed at creating vehicles that improve over time.

Anders Bell, Volvo Cars’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, explained, “The Volvo Cars Superset tech stack is a true game changer: it allows all of our engineering effort to be channeled into one single direction that powers all our products, instead of working on specific car projects.”

The Superset tech stack, which debuted with the EX90, will serve as the foundation for all future Volvo EVs. This unified approach combines systems, modules, software, and hardware into a single, scalable platform. Volvo claims this will enable faster development, improved quality, and the ability to continuously enhance vehicles through over-the-air (OTA) updates.

The SPA3 platform, which will underpin the EX60, represents a major transition from its predecessor. It offers enhanced core computing capabilities and improved scalability, potentially allowing Volvo to develop EVs ranging from smaller than the EX30 to larger than the EX90 using the same technology base. This modularity is projected to lead to lower investment costs and stronger future cash flow.

In addition to the EX60, Volvo plans to introduce the ES90, an electric sedan scheduled for unveiling in March 2025. The ES90 will be based on the current SPA2 platform, which underpins the EX90.

Furthermore, Volvo’s new production approach, showcased at its Torslanda plant, aims to streamline production by locating all necessary capabilities for car production in the same area. This strategy, coupled with the use of common key components across SPA3-based EVs, is projected to strongly reduce complexity and production costs while increasing flexibility.

Despite recent adjustments to its timeline for achieving 100% EV sales, Volvo has confirmed that five new electric models will join its lineup, which already includes the EX40, EC40, EX30, EM90, and the recently launched three-row EX90.

As Volvo pushes forward with its new EV strategy, the EX60, ES90, and the SPA3 platform represent a pivotal moment in the company’s history. By focusing on scalable, upgradeable technology and closed-loop development based on data and connectivity, Volvo is positioning itself as a tech and EV leader in the global market.
