With the European Union (EU) seeing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), Volvo is taking proactive steps by shifting and accelerating its EV production plans in Belgium.
In detail, Volvo’s plans to shift production of the new Volvo EX30 and EX90 models to Belgium according to The Times of London, where this represents a strategic maneuver to avoid potential disruptions posed by impending tariffs on Chinese EVs by the European Commission (EC). Volvo had denied claims that the planned shift of EX30 and EX90 production from China to Belgium aimed to avoid potential EU tariffs on Chinese EVs. In addition, the United Kingdom’s (UK) EV production of these Volvo models will also be shifted to Belgium.
While Volvo originally planned to start its European-based EV production in 2025, recent developments have prompted an expedited timeline for the transition. As of now, the EC’s ongoing investigation into Chinese EV subsidies has heightened trade tensions, with impending tariffs expected to be announced on June 10 and after the European Parliament election on June 9.
While Volvo remains focused on optimizing its manufacturing footprint to align with evolving market dynamics, the company is not holding back on innovations. To elaborate, Volvo’s chances of revolutionizing the European market are still near with its EX90 set to launch with the company’s EV battery passport alongside it.
As Volvo continues to adapt to new changes, the company’s strategic realignment of EV production underscores its proactive stance in safeguarding its competitive positioning amidst geopolitical uncertainties. As Chinese automakers await the decision from the EC, Volvo’s nimble response reflects its aim to maintain operational agility in a dynamic global landscape.
