In the evolving electric vehicle (EV) landscape, Volvo is introducing the “world’s first EV battery passport,” which will debut alongside its new EX90 electric SUV model later in the year according to Reuters.

Volvo’s EV battery passport is made to provide buyers with unprecedented transparency regarding their EV’s battery, including critical information such as its composition, material origins, recycled content, and carbon footprint. Moreover, this information will be readily accessible to owners through a simple QR code scan on the inside of the driver’s side door according to Reuters.

Furthermore, Volvo’s EV battery passport solution was developed in collaboration with Circulor over the past five years, where the passport utilizes blockchain technology to deliver comprehensive information about the vehicle’s battery as aforementioned.

Vanessa Butani, Volvo’s head of global sustainability, expressed the importance of the EV battery passports to Reuters stating, “It’s really important for us to be a pioneer and a leader.” With EVs requiring these types of passports by 2027 in Europe, Volvo is making a headstart while accomplishing its dedication to an all-electric future by 2030.

As for Volvo’s EX90, its debut was initially scheduled for release last year but experienced delays in addressing Lidar software issues, and now the new scheduled release of the EX90 is ready to hit dealerships later this year.

As a result, through Volvo’s proactive approach to implementing the EV battery passport, the company’s goal for accountability and sustainability in its EV lineup is setting a new standard for transparency while empowering buyers to make informed choices as they transition to EVs.
