In terms of the partnership detail, it entails accelerating the production and adoption of advanced battery cells. Under the terms of the non-exclusive license, PowerCo will produce up to 40 GWh of battery cells annually utilizing QuantumScape’s proprietary technology with an option to expand to 80 GWh. As a result, this capacity could power around one million EVs annually.

In detail of QuantumScape’s proprietary technology, it centers on a proprietary solid-state ceramic separator that uses a pure lithium-metal anode. Moreover, it is designed to deliver premium energy density, fast charging capabilities, and improved safety profiles in EV batteries.

Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership stating, “We have been collaborating and testing QuantumScape prototype cells for years now, and we are looking forward to bringing this technology of the future into series production.”

Furthermore, this partnership substitutes a previous joint venture between Volkswagen Group and QuantumScape for a more focused and streamlined approach to bringing solid-state batteries to the EV market.

Thomas Schmall, Volkswagen Group Board Member for Technology, expressed the company’s goal for innovation stating, “This agreement with QuantumScape will ensure the Volkswagen Group’s global fleet has access to this groundbreaking battery technology for years to come.”

As part of this new phase, Blome has stepped down from QuantumScape’s board of directors to lead PowerCo’s efforts in this partnership. His successor on the board will be announced in the coming months.

With the EV market seeing more innovations including these solid-state batteries, the partnership between PowerCo and QuantumScape will showcase a major milestone in the search for more efficient, powerful, and sustainable energy storage solutions for EVs.
