Volkswagen’s ID.3 and ID.4 electric vehicles are set to undergo extensive updates as the German automaker works to extend the lifespan of its current EV lineup ahead of a major platform shift later this decade. The updated vehicles will adopt design elements from the ID.2all concept and reintroduce physical controls, a move aimed at addressing long-standing criticisms of the touch-heavy user interface in the company’s first-generation MEB-based EVs.

A return to physical controls

One of the most notable changes in the revamped ID.3 and ID.4 is the reintroduction of physical knobs and buttons, particularly for essential features like volume control. This should address complaints about VW’s previous reliance on capacitive sliders and touchscreen menus, which proved problematic in first-gen MEB EVs.

“We’re going to bring back a round knob for the volume control. If you develop something that works, and it has worked for years, there’s no reason to replace it,” a company insider told Autocar.

Volkswagen will also upgrade the ID.3 and ID.4 with more efficient electric motors and enhanced battery and inverter technology, which were first introduced with the ID.7 sedan. While performance specs have not been confirmed, these hardware changes are expected to yield gains in range and overall drivability for the upcoming models.

Volkswagen’s broader EV strategy reset

VW technical development head Kai Grünitz confirmed the updates in an interview with Autocar. During the interview, he stated that the ID.3 would gain a lower, more compact stance and styling cues that align it more closely with the upcoming ID.2. A similar design refresh is planned for the ID.4, with both models receiving revised interiors and improved software that inspired by the ID.2all concept.

The facelifted ID.3 is expected to be revealed in the second quarter of 2026. The revamped ID.4 will follow later during the year. These updates are part of Volkswagen’s strategy to maintain a competitive EV portfolio through the decade as it prepares to launch next-generation 800V SSP-based vehicles, which are expected to be introduced around 2028.

VW is also planning regional design differentiation, with Europe and the U.S. sharing common themes and Chinese-market models receiving a distinct styling approach.
