Volkswagen is accelerating its China strategy with the rollout of onboard AI “agents” in new vehicles starting in the second half of 2026.

The move is aimed at closing the technology gap with fast-moving Chinese EV rivals, as the automaker shifts toward a more localized, software-driven approach in the world’s largest auto market.

Volkswagen deploys AI agents to boost in-car intelligence

Volkswagen Group plans to introduce AI-powered agents in vehicles built on its China-specific electronic architecture. Unlike traditional voice assistants, these agents are designed to handle more complex, multi-step tasks, such as finding top-rated restaurants, making reservations, navigating to the destination, and even arranging parking, according to Reuters.

According to China chief Ralf Brandstaetter, the goal is to enable more intuitive, human-like interaction between driver and vehicle while maintaining strong data protection standards.

The system is being developed in partnership with Horizon Robotics, whose CEO Yu Kai said the technology will scale beyond premium vehicles into the mass market, an important step as competition intensifies across price segments.

China-first strategy drives EV and software push

The AI rollout is part of Volkswagen’s broader “In China, for China” strategy, which emphasizes local R&D, faster development cycles, and deeper partnerships with domestic tech firms.

CEO Oliver Blume positioned the initiative as part of the company’s largest-ever EV push in China, with plans to launch more than 20 electrified models and bring a total of 50 new vehicles to market by 2030.

The strategy reflects mounting pressure from Chinese automakers, which have surged ahead in software integration, pricing, and development speed. Volkswagen’s pivot aims to reposition the brand from a legacy combustion leader to a competitive player in intelligent electric vehicles.

With AI agents set to debut later this year, Volkswagen is signaling a shift toward software-defined vehicles as it works to regain momentum in China’s rapidly evolving EV landscape.
