VinFast has officially broke ground on a new electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Subang, West Java, Indonesia, as part of its global expansion strategy. The $200 million plant will accelerate VinFast’s position in Southeast Asia’s growing EV market.

VinFast’s Indonesian plant will have an annual production capacity of 50,000 EVs and will focus on producing right-hand drive (RHD) versions of the company’s e-SUV models including the VF 3, VF 5, VF 6, and VF 7, specifically for the Indonesian market. The plant will also feature key production areas such as a Body Shop, General Assembly Shop, Paint Shop, and a testing area according to VinFast.
General H. Moeldoko, Chief of Presidential Staff of the Republic of Indonesia, emphasized VinFast’s presence in Indonesia bringing jobs and improving welfare by further stating, “The Indonesian government heavily encourages foreign investment entering our country, especially in the automotive industry sector. We believe that VinFast presence will bring technological innovation and knowledge transfer that is much needed to increase the competitiveness of the national automotive industry”.
VinFast’s expansion into Indonesia also arrives at a crucial moment for the company, where the company is also constructing an EV plant in India with an annual production capacity of 150,000 units. However, VinFast has delayed the start of production at its planned United States (U.S.) plant in North Carolina from 2025 to 2028, citing the need to manage short-term spending more effectively.

As of now, VinFast has already launched two RHD electric SUV models in Indonesia: the VF 5 and VF e34. Moreover, the company has implemented flexible sales policies including a battery subscription program.
Temmy Wiradjaja, CEO of VinFast Indonesia, expressed the importance of the new plant stating, “This project will demonstrate VinFast’s long-term commitment to Indonesia, boosting the electric vehicle sector, supporting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for Indonesians.”
As VinFast’s strategic investments in key markets like Indonesia and India will be aimed at capturing a considerable share of the growing Southeast Asian EV market, the company’s expansion efforts will be closely monitored by the EV industry and competitors alike. VinFast’s Indonesian plant is set to start operations in Q4 2025.
