The Vietnamese government is preparing to introduce subsidies for electricity prices at electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The government aims to expand this infrastructure, ensuring public EV charging systems are available in all urban areas across the nation.

Vietnam, home to emerging EV automaker VinFast, currently has over 150,000 EV charging ports, with the majority owned and operated by VinFast itself. According to Reuters, this initiative is scheduled for submission to the central government for approval by mid-September. To support this goal, a unified set of technical standards for charging stations is expected to be issued by the end of August.

“Green energy transition is an essential and important task in the process of realizing green development objectives and in fulfilling Vietnam’s international commitments,” the government stated, underlining its goal to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Moreover, the Vietnamese government is developing a comprehensive package of incentives targeting various aspects of the EV ecosystem including production, imports, and consumer adoption. These initiatives build upon earlier policies that exempted registration fees for new EVs and reduced the special consumption tax applied to EVs.

Vietnam’s multifaceted approach to promoting EVs demonstrates its commitment to sustainable transportation and recognition of the crucial role that EVs play in reducing carbon emissions. By addressing infrastructure development, financial incentives, and technical standards, the country is creating a conducive environment for the growth of its EV market.

As of now, Vietnam’s EV market is seeing growth with VinFast making massive progress with the domestic market. Notably, VinFast VF 3 broke the record of 27,649 pre-orders within in just 66 hours.

As these plans progress, the success of these initiatives could not only contribute significantly to Vietnam’s environmental goals but also potentially establish the country as a model for EV adoption in the region.
