ENTEK’s New Terre Haute Plant Comes In 1.72 Billion Square Meters Of Annual Output, Creating 1,398 Jobs And Supporting Clean Energy Goals

In the United States (U.S.) electric vehicle (EV) battery industry, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a conditional commitment of $1.2 billion to ENTEK Lithium Separators LLC for the construction of an advanced lithium-ion battery separator production plant in Terre Haute, Indiana.
In detail, ENTEK’s new plant will produce battery separators, which are important components that prevent short circuits between a battery’s anode and cathode while allowing ionic conduction.
Once operational, the plant is projected to have an annual production capacity of 1.72 billion square meters of separator material. This will potentially support the production of around 1.9 million mid-size EVs or 1.3 million electric SUVs. Also, the company will also be able to supply separators for energy storage applications, further contributing to the growth of the clean energy sector.
Moreover, the new plant is also projected to create 763 construction jobs and 635 permanent operational positions, showing ENTEK’s prioritization of local hiring, particularly workers displaced from other production industries. Notably, the company also forged partnerships with local educational institutions and community organizations to provide training and recruitment opportunities.
Significantly, the project aligns with the Biden administration’s target of having 50% of new vehicle sales be EVs or plug-in hybrids by 2030. Jigar Shah, director of the DOE’s Loan Programs Office, expressed this sentiment stating, “With this loan, we have a clear path to having enough operating and planned capacity to meet the president’s goal.”
Furthermore, this investment arrives at a crucial moment as the DOE estimates that by 2030, the North American lithium-ion EV battery industry will require annual separator production of 7 to 10 billion square meters. As a result, ENTEK’s contribution will play an essential role in meeting this demand and cutting down reliance on foreign suppliers.
In addition, the separators produced at this plant will assist U.S. EV producers meet the battery component sourcing requirements under the Inflation Reduction Act’s Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, which provides up to $7,500 in tax credits for the purchase of new clean vehicles.
It is important to note that this conditional loan is being delivered through the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) Loan Program, which supports U.S. manufacturing of advanced technology vehicles and components that improve fuel economy. It showcases another step in the Biden administration’s comprehensive strategy to build a more sustainable transportation system and cut down greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.
As the U.S. continues to invest in domestic EV production and related technologies, this project spotlights the government’s goal of creating jobs, strengthening supply chains, and accelerating the transition to clean energy. With the finalization of this loan, the bolstering of the domestic EV supply chain will advance the U.S. clean energy goals.
