Toyota has a lineup of legacy vehicles that have been fan-favorites including its Highlander, which may turn from an internal combustion engine (ICE) to an electric vehicle (EV). As the company has been careful in its EV expansion, the transition of its Highlander to an EV model could be the push that it needs.

The Toyota Highlander is a popular three-row SUV that has been a nameplate in the U.S. automotive market. According to CarBuzz, the transformation of the Highlander into an EV is underway in Toyota’s plans for EV expansion. The Toyota Highlander turning into an EV form could mean a big boost for the company as it did track a sales number of 169,543 in the U.S. for 2023. The addition of the Highlander in EV form into Toyota’s EV lineup can promote its position in the EV market. 

In addition to the Highlander’s electric transition, Toyota will also add a Lexus variant called the TZ. This EV model also comes from the Highlander platform. Unfortunately, this will be the only other model being turned electric as other models will remain the same. Moreover, plans for a compact electric crossover called the bZ3x may arrive in 2026 as well. 

With Toyota previously stated to expand its EV lineup by 2026, the company is aiming for electric mobility with its upcoming EV offerings. However, the company has stated that it will not go full-electric. As underwhelming as that is, Toyota’s navigation to full-electric will be determined through the success of its future EV lineup in the EV market as currently the bZ4X is the only known EV in its lineup.

As Toyota is late to the EV game, it can still catch up to EV leaders like Tesla with the right approach and strategy. As the automotive landscape is shifting towards its attention to EVs, the transition to electric mobility is heading to a resounding step aiming to elevate the EV industry.
