Tesla’s FSD V13 Update Is Delayed, Now Promising A 4X Improvement In “Miles Between Interventions

In the realm of autonomous driving technology in electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla has updated its AI roadmap, confirming that the Full Self-Driving (FSD) v13 release has been pushed to late November, with shifting claims about its performance improvements.
The company initially promised a “~6x improvement in miles between necessary interventions” for v13 in September, which CEO Elon Musk later adjusted to “5-6x” during last week’s earnings call. The latest update now indicates a more modest 4x increase compared to v12.5.4, highlighting the challenges in achieving consistent self-driving performance gains.
Despite the delays, Tesla reports several October achievements, including the deployment of end-to-end highway driving capability to approximately 50,000 customers through v12.5.6.1, improvements to the Cybertruck’s responsiveness, and a successful “We, Robot” event where 50 autonomous vehicles transported over 2,000 passengers.
According to Tesla, the upcoming v13 update is set to introduce substantial technological advancements that could redefine user experience and vehicle capability. Among the key improvements, the update will support 36 Hz full-resolution video inputs specifically optimized for AI4 hardware. This enhancement is expected to deliver smoother, more responsive visuals that align closely with real-time requirements, boosting the system’s overall effectiveness.
A significant upgrade to neural network architectures will be included, optimizing how the system processes information. Additionally, scaling improvements will be applied across multiple parameters—model size will increase threefold, context length will be extended by three times, and data integration will expand by 4.2 times. These enhancements collectively promise greater precision and adaptability in diverse driving conditions.
One of the most practical additions in v13 is the integration of audio inputs, enabling the system to detect emergency vehicle sirens. This feature enhances safety by alerting drivers more effectively to potential hazards on the road. Furthermore, the update will improve navigation, offering better destination options and expanded parking capabilities, aimed at creating a smoother and more intuitive driving experience.
However, the rollout comes with notable limitations. The major improvements will be exclusively available to vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 (HW4), while HW3 owners will receive only incremental updates to city driving capabilities through v12.5.x models.
While the company uses “miles between necessary disengagement” as a key metric, it has not shared official disengagement data. Crowdsourced data from over 40,000 miles of testing suggests that the current v12.5 actually shows regression compared to v12.3, the previous widely released update.
Tesla now aims to release v13.0 to internal customers this week, followed by a series of point releases throughout November, targeting a wide release of v13.3 around Thanksgiving for AI4-equipped vehicles. The company also plans to expand its “Actually Smart Summon” feature to Europe, China, and other global markets, though no specific timeline was provided.
As Tesla continues its AI advancements in its EVs, the aim for improved safety and autonomous driving experience is still an important aspect as the company’s FSD technology matures.
