The Last Time Tesla Released Its Autopilot Safety Data Report Was Back In Q4 2022

Tesla has released its latest Autopilot safety data report regarding its Full Self-Driving (FSD) program that resides in its electric vehicle (EV) lineup. It has also been over a year since the company reported its safety data in Q4 2022.

The Autopilot safety data report entails the miles driven between accidents in EVs using different levels of Autopilot in the FSD program. Notably, the safety data report displays Q1 2023 data, which showed a decline in the miles driven between accidents compared to the previous year. As for Q1 2024, the safety data report showed improvement, where there was one crash accident for every 7.63 million miles driven with Autopilot compared to one crash accident for every 955,000 miles driven without Autopilot.
In contrast, the Autopilot safety data compared to the most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 2022 showed that in the U.S., there is around one crash for every 670,000 miles driven.
Previously, Tesla’s release of these safety data reports brought scrutiny with its published updated safety data up to Q3 2022, reassessing released figures of incidents where no airbags were deployed, invalid or duplicate mileage records, and events counted multiple times. As a result, this action was met with skepticism. Despite Tesla’s Autopilot being met with previous criticism, the latest safety data report claims its Autopilot improving vehicle safety as aforementioned.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been pushing the FSD program with full efforts trying to have it gain ground with the upcoming unveiling of its robotaxi plan on August 8. Furthermore, Musk’s recent visit to China gained tentative approval for its FSD program in the Chinese market. With these actions being done to push the FSD program, the Autopilot safety data report may also reinforce this push.
As Tesla aims to overcome these hurdles, the latest safety data will be pivotal in demonstrating the safety benefits of its Autopilot and FSD program. For now, the upcoming Tesla shareholder meeting on June 13 could discuss efforts to improve the safety of its FSD program based on the Autopilot safety data report.
