The latest data points to continued momentum for electric vehicles across the country, with strong growth in both consumer interest and market share.

Tesla and Polestar sales surge in Australia as demand rises

Combined sales from Tesla and Polestar reached 1,458 units in April, up from 702 in the same month last year, according to the Electric Vehicle Council.

Tesla accounted for the majority of deliveries with 1,225 vehicles, led by the Tesla Model Y, which contributed 822 units. Polestar delivered 233 vehicles, with the Polestar 4 leading its lineup at 190 units, according to The Driven.

Broader EV adoption accelerates across the Australian market

The growth reflects a wider shift in Australia’s EV landscape. New South Wales recorded a 66% increase in EV sales year-on-year, while the Australian Capital Territory saw EVs account for 34% of new vehicle sales in April, a record for the region.

Nationally, EVs reached a peak share of 14.5% of new car sales in March, highlighting steady adoption momentum despite market variability.

Rising fuel costs are also driving consumer behavior. Insurance provider NRMA reported a 121% increase in EV insurance quote requests in April compared to a year earlier, indicating growing interest among prospective buyers.

Other automakers are also participating in the trend. Hyundai Motor Company reported 475 EV sales in April, with models like the Elexio, Kona, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 contributing to its performance.

While Tesla’s April sales declined from March due to typical delivery cycles, the company is increasing shipments to meet demand, with wait times extending several months.
