Tesla has officially opened orders for the Model Y L, a long-wheelbase version of its popular electric crossover, in Australia and New Zealand after the variant’s successful launch in China. The new model features a longer wheelbase, additional interior space, and what appears to be a larger battery pack compared with the version sold in China.

The rollout was first reported by autoevolution, which noted that the move could signal Tesla’s broader plans to expand the Model Y L into additional markets.

Tesla launches Model Y L in Australia and New Zealand

Tesla introduced the Model Y L in China in August 2025, where the long-wheelbase configuration quickly gained traction among buyers seeking more interior space.

The company has now opened order books in Australia and New Zealand, with deliveries expected to begin in the second quarter. Pricing starts at AU$74,900 in Australia and NZ$83,900 in New Zealand, roughly equivalent to about $53,100 USD.

Like the Chinese version, the Model Y L is based on the Long Range all-wheel-drive variant and is not currently offered with other powertrain options.

Visually, the vehicle closely resembles the standard Model Y but features a longer and flatter roofline and a stretched body. The Model Y L is about 7 inches (18 cm) longer overall, including a 6-inch (15 cm) wheelbase extension, which provides additional room for passengers.

The added space allows Tesla to offer a more spacious interior layout, including improved second-row seating and a more usable third row compared with the optional seven-seat layout in the regular Model Y.

Longer wheelbase allows larger battery and extended range

According to autoevolution, the version of the Model Y L launching in Australia and New Zealand appears to include a larger battery pack than the Chinese model.

Tesla lists an estimated 681 km (423 miles) WLTP range for the vehicle. By comparison, the standard Model Y in the region is rated at around 600 km (373 miles) WLTP.

The additional range likely stems from the extended wheelbase, which provides space for a larger battery pack.

However, the extra battery capacity may also add weight. Tesla lists the 0–100 km/h acceleration time at about 5.0 seconds, slightly slower than the 4.5-second figure for the Model Y L sold in China.

Despite the performance difference, the expanded interior space and improved range could help the Model Y L appeal to buyers seeking a more spacious alternative within Tesla’s lineup, especially following the discontinuation of the Model X in some markets.
