Tesl Model Y Set To Overtake Toyota RAV4 And Make History As First EV To Lead Annual Sales

Tesla’s Model Y electric vehicle (EV) is making a strong push to become the best-selling passenger vehicle in the United States (U.S.) this year, after trailing the Toyota RAV4 for the first half of 2024.
According to registration data from Experian and cited by WolfStreet, the Tesla Model Y accounted for 2.8% of new vehicle registrations in the U.S. through the first six months of 2024, nearly tied with the RAV4’s 2.8% share. The Ford F-150 pickup, long the perennial best-selling vehicle, has dropped to third place with a 2.7% share.
This would mark a major milestone for Tesla if the Model Y can overtake the RAV4 by the end of the year. It would be the first time an electric vehicle (EV) tops the annual sales charts in the country as the Model Y is already the best-selling vehicle in the world.

Tesla’s overall U.S. market share has grown to 4.1%, though it still lags behind the Detroit automakers and industry giants like Toyota and Honda. However, Tesla’s rapid rise is reshaping the American automotive landscape, with EVs accounting for a record 9% market share in Q2 2024.
The Model Y’s ascent comes as traditional automakers grapple with challenges. Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep and Ram, has seen its US market share slide amid complaints from its dealer network about high prices and low incentives. Ford has also ceded some ground, with the F-150 no longer the dominant force it once was.
If the Model Y can clinch the title of best-selling U.S. vehicle, it would mark a symbolic triumph for Tesla and the growing adoption of EVs. But the battle is far from over, as automakers race to electrify their lineups and capture consumer demand.

As the Tesla’s EV strategy continues to prove successful in its sales, the Model Y is making strides as the most popular option in its EV lineup while accelerating the transition to electric mobility in the U.S. automotive landscape.
