Tesla Model 3+ and Model Y L to deliver record ranges

Two new Tesla variants are set for imminent approval in China, promising standout battery range and expanded options for local buyers.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has added the Model 3+ sedan and the six-seater Model Y L crossover to its list of new energy vehicles eligible for purchase tax exemptions. The Model 3+ is rated for up to 830 kilometers (516 miles) on China’s CLTC standard, while the Model Y L reaches 751 kilometers (467 miles).

Model 3+ breaks Tesla’s range record

The upcoming Model 3+ surpasses all other Tesla models currently available in China in range. The new Tesla sedan has a curb weight of 1,760 kilograms. The Model 3+ is the single-motor sedan that uses a 78.4-kWh ternary lithium-ion battery from LG Energy Solution. The pack’s 448-kilogram weight gives it an energy density of 175 Wh/kg. Its peak motor power is 225 kW, up from the 194 kW in the current single-motor Model 3.

According to CN EV Post, the new Tesla sedan is the longest-range Model 3 on sale in China, starting at RMB 285,500 ($32,790). The Model 3+’s 800–830 km range estimate positions it as the new flagship for range. Tesla already offers three Model 3 trims in China. The entry-level rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Model 3 uses CATL’s lithium iron phosphate batteries, while the other two variants also use LG’s ternary packs.

Model Y L adds space and range

The six-seat Model Y L features an 82.0-kWh ternary battery pack from LG Energy Solution, boasting an energy density of 176 Wh/kg. Dual motors deliver peak outputs of 142 kW at the front and 198 kW at the rear. It is expected to enter the market this fall, following its inclusion in the MIIT regulatory catalog last month.

The Model Y L’s 751 km CLTC range exceeds that of the current five-seat long-range Model Y, which starts at RMB 313,500 ($43,654). A rear-wheel-drive Model Y remains available from RMB 263,500 ($36,692).
