Tesla has started testing a new and more affordable version of its Model 3 Standard Range Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) electric vehicle (EV) in Mexico with a textile interior instead of the previously standard vegan leather.

The changes in Tesla’s new Model 3 Standard Range RWD trim, currently exclusive to the Mexican market, are accompanied by the removal of several features that were once standard across all Model 3 trims. In detail, the rear passenger screen introduced in the recent Model 3 refresh has been eliminated, and both the heated steering wheel and heated seats are no longer included.

Tesla has also made changes to other interior elements. The ambient lighting, while still present, is now limited to white instead of the customizable RGB option available in other trims. In addition, acoustic glass is now only present on the front windows rather than throughout the entire EV.

These modifications have allowed Tesla to price this Model 3 trim at 749,000 pesos in Mexico. After accounting for exchange rates and removing VAT, this translates to around $35,000. As a result, this is about $4,000 less than the current Model 3 RWD price in the United States (U.S.) with the standard vegan leather interior. As for the U.S. market, Tesla recently added a new Long Range RWD trim priced at $42,490 before incentives.

Notably, some of these changes may be software-locked rather than hardware removals. Tesla has previously employed this strategy with features like heated seats, allowing buyers to unlock them later through paid software updates.

While it is unclear if this more affordable Model 3 trim will be made available in other markets, its introduction in Mexico could be seen as a test run for a broader strategy to make EVs more accessible to a wider range of buyers. With this in mind, the success of this strategic move in Mexico may determine whether similar options become available in other markets.
