Automakers That Can Access Tesla’s Supercharger Includes Ford And Rivian Through Adapters

In the electric vehicle(EV) charging landscape, Tesla has recently added Mercedes-Benz to its list of automakers set to gain access to its Supercharger network. This signals additional progress in the EV industry-wide adoption of the North American Charging Standard (NACS).
In detail, Tesla’s NACS support webpage now illustrates Mercedes-Benz alongside General Motors, Volvo, and Polestar in its “coming soon” section. However, the timeline for implementation has become less certain. Previously, Tesla had indicated a “Spring 2024” target, but this specific timeframe has been replaced with a “coming soon” status.
The delay in rollout is possibly linked to recent upheavals within Tesla’s Supercharger team, where Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s decision to fire 500 members including Rebecca Tinucci, who played a crucial role in negotiating the industry’s shift to NACS. As a result, this may have disrupted ongoing discussions with other automakers, where the reorganization has temporarily halted progress on NACS adoption across the industry.

Despite this, the addition of Mercedes-Benz to the list implies that Tesla is still moving forward with its plans to open up its Supercharger network to other automakers. As of now, Ford and Rivian EV owners can access Tesla Superchargers by utilizing adapters. Furthermore, Tesla has started rehiring Supercharger workers, implying efforts to get the transition back on track.
Notably, the NACS connector was recently certified as J3400 by SAE International, which is set to become the new industry standard. This makes EV charging more simple while offering major technical advantages over the older CCS standard.
As Tesla works to overcome its internal challenges, the eyes of the EV landscape remain fixed on them for progress. With more automakers added to Tesla’s Supercharger network, the EV charging experience is set to become more convenient with Tesla leading the charge.
