The move shifts both models to inventory-only sales, marking a major transition as Tesla reallocates resources toward next-generation technologies.

Tesla has begun phasing out custom orders for the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X, signaling the start of what CEO Elon Musk described as an “honorable discharge” for its flagship vehicles.
The move shifts both models to inventory-only sales, marking a major transition as Tesla reallocates resources toward next-generation technologies.
Tesla has removed the Model S and Model X configurators from its website, redirecting buyers exclusively to available inventory. Customers can no longer customize new builds, with only pre-configured vehicles offered for purchase or lease.
Elon Musk confirmed the change publicly, stating that custom orders have ended and only remaining inventory is available. The update follows earlier signals from Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings call, where the company outlined plans to wind down the two models.
First introduced in 2012 and 2015, the Model S and Model X played a central role in establishing Tesla as a premium EV leader. However, their share of overall deliveries has declined significantly in recent years as the company prioritized higher-volume vehicles like the Model 3 and Model Y.
Tesla’s decision is closely tied to its broader strategy of reallocating manufacturing capacity, particularly at its Fremont facility. The company is increasingly focusing on autonomous driving, AI development, and production of its Optimus humanoid robot platform.
Remaining inventory units of the Model S and Model X may include incentives such as lifetime free Supercharging, Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and premium connectivity, depending on configuration. Leasing options remain available, though pricing and availability vary.
International markets, including Europe and China, have already seen similar reductions in availability, suggesting a coordinated global phase-out.
Once current inventory is depleted, Tesla is expected to discontinue new sales of both models entirely. The company has indicated that an official send-off event may take place, marking the end of two vehicles that helped define the modern EV era.
