Tesla has announced a substantial increase in production of its North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for its electric vehicles (EVs), reaching 8,000 units per week at its Gigafactory in New York.

The increase in adapter production comes after months of delays in the rollout of Tesla’s open charging network initiative. Initially announced in 2023, the plan to allow non-Tesla EVs access to the Supercharger network has faced several setbacks including the unexpected layoff of Tesla’s entire charging team earlier this year.

While Ford and Rivian were the first automakers to be onboarded to the Supercharger network in March, progress has stalled since then. Many EV owners from these brands have reported long waits for their NACS adapters, with Ford citing “constrained supply” as a major issue.

In addition to Tesla’s announcement posted on its X account, the company’s website now indicates that the plan to open the network will continue “throughout 2024” and into 2025, suggesting a longer timeline than initially anticipated. The company lists several brands as “coming soon” to the Supercharger network, including Nissan, General Motors, Volvo, Polestar, and Mercedes-Benz.

While challenges remain, Tesla’s announcement of ramped-up adapter production suggests that the company is making strides in overcoming the recent setbacks. Nevertheless, the increased production of NACS adapters is a positive sign for the EV industry.

As more non-Tesla EVs gain access to the extensive Supercharger network, this will lead to increased buyer confidence in EVs and accelerate the transition to electric mobility.
