Tesla’s FSD Progress In China Follows Tentative Approval From Chinese Authorities During Elon Musk’s China Visit

With Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s recent visit to China and receiving tentative approval for the deployment of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) program, the company is now making major progress toward registering it with Chinese authorities.
The progress of registering Tesla’s FSD program starts with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology with aims to initiate internal testing on Chinese roads according to Reuters. This is done before delivering it as an upgrade to Chinese Tesla owners in the coming months. Notably, the FSD program will be deployed through over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
Furthermore, Tesla plans to offer the FSD program as a subscription-based service in China, where the subscription model, if implemented, would deliver higher flexibility and affordability for its users while further sweetening Tesla’s appeal in the Chinese market.
Tesla’s efforts to progress its FSD program in China align with its global strategy, where recently reported that the company is planning a data center on Chinese soil to further adapt the program to local road conditions and regulations along with collecting data from customer vehicles and conducting extensive testing with an internal employee fleet to ensure the system’s reliability and safety.

With Tesla’s FSD program launched in China, it will certainly place Tesla in the running of the autonomous driving space. Currently, Chinese tech companies such as Huawei and Xpeng, are already offering level-two autonomous driving capabilities. As a result, Tesla’s entry will challenge them with its FSD program.
As Tesla progresses with its plans to launch its FSD program in China, the EV market will closely monitor the upcoming developments while projecting the potential impact on Tesla’s sales and market share in the country after suffering a sales decline of 18% year-over-year and 30% month-over-month. With the Chinese government’s support for Tesla’s FSD program, China’s autonomous driving space will soon see more autonomous driving programs bolstered within EVs in its automotive landscape.
