In a strategic move to enhance the performance of its popular electric vehicle (EV) models, Tesla has rolled out slight range increases for select configurations of the Model Y and Model 3.

Range Boost Details

In detail, the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor now has an EPA-estimated range of 311 miles, up from the previous 308 miles. As a result, this represents a modest 1% increase in driving range for Tesla’s best-selling EV model.

Similarly, the Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor with 19-inch wheels saw its range jump from 305 miles to 316 miles. This change, which only affects the specific 19-inch wheel configuration, could potentially be linked to updates in the EPA’s testing cycle rather than significant powertrain or efficiency improvements.

Unlike many other automakers, Tesla regularly updates its EV lineups without waiting for new model year introductions. Notably, this flexibility allows the company to continuously refine and optimize its EVs.

Tesla’s Role in California’s EV Adoption

Interestingly, the Model Y’s dominance has turned heads in the California market, with the electric SUV topping the state’s vehicle registration charts. In Q3 2024, the Model Y accounted for an exceptional 105,693 registrations, cementing its status as the best-selling vehicle in the nation’s largest automotive market. In addition, Tesla recently celebrated the production of its one millionth Model Y at the Fremont plant

Furthermore, Tesla’s influence extends beyond just the Model Y, as the Model 3 also continues to be a top-selling passenger car in California, ranking third behind the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry.

While the EV landscape in California is becoming increasingly competitive, Tesla’s brand loyalty, cutting-edge technology, and direct-to-consumer sales model have helped the company maintain its stronghold.

With alternative powertrain vehicles now making up 39.4% of new vehicle registrations in the state, Tesla’s progress in the EV landscape has paved the way for broader market adoption of EVs.
