Suzuki Plans To Introduce Its First Full-Electrified EV In 2025

Suzuki has announced a significant shift in its product strategy for the UK and European markets, focusing heavily on electric vehicles (EVs) and phasing out several internal combustion engine (ICE) models. This arrives as part of the company’s efforts to comply with stringent emissions regulations.
Suzuki UK recently declared an end to the “era of combustion engines,” revealing plans to discontinue sales of pure ICE vehicles. By early 2025, the company will stop sales of four ICE models in the UK: the Swift Sport, Ignis, Swace, and Jimny LCV. This will result in a fully electrified Suzuki range in the UK by 2025, depending on the pace of dealers to clear the existing stock of ICE vehicles.
Regarding Suzuki’s post-transition to electrification, the company’s UK lineup will consist of full hybrid versions of the Swift small car, Vitara and S-Cross crossovers, and the Across plug-in hybrid. Suzuki is also gearing up to introduce its first pure EV in 2025, likely based on the eVX concept car unveiled in 2023.
Suzuki’s European operations will follow a similar trajectory with the discontinuation of the Ignis, Swace, and Jimny models by early 2025. Notably, Suzuki has also decided against developing a performance Sport variant of its new Swift model.
Dale Wyatt, Director of Suzuki UK & Ireland, expressed the strategy in a statement saying, “The departure of these models will make room for EV and enable us to compete during a period where our sales ratio of hybrid versus EV products will drive our business. We’re exiting the ICE era with a focus on SUVs and the new Swift, then starting in the second half of 2025, we’ll begin a period of EV growth.”
As a result of this strategic shift, Suzuki’s sales volume in the short term is expected to see an impact. The company projects a 19% cut in vehicle sales across Europe this year, with an estimated 191,000 units compared to 236,000 last year. Although Suzuki sees this as a necessary step to align with the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, which sets annual targets for zero-emission vehicle sales, aiming for 80% of new vehicles sold to be zero-emission by 2030.
Globally, Suzuki is investing heavily in EVs, particularly in India. The company has committed over $1.3 billion to its electrification push in the country, including plans for a battery plant for EVs starting in 2026. Suzuki also plans to introduce five EVs by 2030 and a strategic partnership with Toyota to develop technologies for smaller EVs.
As Suzuki reflects a broader industry trend towards EVs driven by regulatory pressures and changing buyer preferences, the company is aiming to evolve in the changing automotive landscape. With Suzuki’s bold strategy in place, its influence to other automakers to set the same tone will be reviewed upon during the company’s electrification progress.
