A turning point in the United States (U.S.) automotive landscape is emerging, as new survey data reveals both unprecedented enthusiasm and lingering skepticism about the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, revealing both significant interests in EV adoption and persistent concerns that could slow the transformation of U.S. roads.

Cautious Optimism in EV Adoption

The Verra Mobility survey, which polled 2,000 Americans aged 25 and older, found that nearly half (47%) of respondents plan to purchase an EV within the next five years, with 21% indicating they intend to make the switch in the next one to two years. These numbers are particularly striking when contrasted with current EV ownership—only 7% of respondents currently own an EV, suggesting the potential for substantial market growth.

The findings align with broader industry trends, as noted by Steve Lalla, executive vice president of Commercial Services at Verra Mobility. “Although there have been market indications that EV adoption rates are slowing down, our analysis indicates steady, albeit more cautious adoption and interest,” Lalla explained. This cautious optimism is supported by municipal technology leaders, 48% of whom expect EVs to constitute the majority of personal vehicles within the next decade.

Range, Charging, and Cost Concerns

However, the path to widespread EV adoption faces several significant hurdles. Range anxiety—the fear of running out of power before reaching a charging station—remains a primary concern, with 71% of respondents expressing apprehension about EV driving range. This anxiety is compounded by a lack of familiarity with charging infrastructure: 40% of respondents are unaware of their nearest charging station’s location, and a striking 73% wouldn’t know how to charge an EV rental car.

Cost considerations also play a crucial role in consumer decision-making. While more than half (51%) of respondents indicated they would purchase an EV today if upfront costs were not a factor, there are widespread misconceptions about ongoing expenses. Notably, 63% believe EV maintenance costs exceed those of traditional gas-powered vehicles, and 42% think they’re more likely to need roadside assistance with an EV.

Role of EV Rentals in Education

The survey also revealed interesting insights about consumer education and experimentation. 70% of respondents would consider renting an EV as a “try before you buy” option, suggesting a potential pathway for manufacturers and rental companies to build consumer confidence. This openness to experimentation could help address the knowledge gap evident in the charging awareness statistics.

Political Influence on EV Purchases

Political factors also influence EV adoption plans. Following the 2024 presidential election, 15% of respondents indicated increased likelihood of purchasing an EV in the next four years. Overall sentiment compared to 2023 shows a mixed picture: 31% are more likely to purchase an EV, 24% less likely, and 46% unchanged in their intentions.

EV Market Growth and Challenges

These findings come at a crucial time for the EV market. With EVs representing 8.5% of vehicles sold in mid-2024, according to Edmunds data, the industry stands at an important juncture. The survey suggests that while Americans are increasingly open to EVs, successful mass adoption will require addressing infrastructure concerns, correcting misconceptions about maintenance costs, and improving consumer education about EV operation and charging.

As a result, it illustrates that the transition to EVs is not just about manufacturing and sales—it’s about building consumer confidence through education, infrastructure development, and practical experience in the EV landscape.
