Vontier’s Survey Shows 78% Of EV Drivers WouldDeetour For A charger In A Safe Location And 67% Would Do The Same For One Near Shopping

A recent survey conducted by Vontier, a global industrial technology company, has unveiled crucial insights into the preferences of electric vehicle (EV) drivers when it comes to public charging stations, highlighting safety and convenience as paramount factors influencing EV drivers’ choices.
According to the survey, an overwhelming 78% of EV drivers reported they would go out of their way to use a public charger located in a safe environment. This striking statistic spotlights a major gap in the current EV charging landscape, where many existing stations are often poorly lit, lack security measures, and are situated in isolated areas.
“It’s not just about plugging in anymore—it’s about peace of mind,” stated Mark Morelli, President and CEO at Vontier. “Addressing these safety concerns is imperative for the future of EV adoption, and convenience stores are uniquely positioned to address this challenge. They innately provide a safer, more comfortable charging experience while offering the amenities that drivers desire to be more productive during their charging time.”
The survey also revealed other key preferences among EV drivers:
As a result, these findings suggest that EV drivers are willing to prioritize safety and convenience over proximity, challenging the common concern about EV range and charging access.
Andrew Bennett, President and CEO of EVolve, a Vontier company, expressed the results on this trend stating, “While convenience remains a factor, businesses should never underestimate the power of a superior charging experience. Drivers will more likely stop at your store, and buy more, if done right.”

Notably, Vontier has been actively partnering with major convenience store chains like 7-Eleven, Circle K, and Wawa to deploy EV charging infrastructure that meets these EV owner needs. As of now, the company’s portfolio includes EVolve, which manages over 85,000 charging ports globally through its software leader Driivz. Interestingly, 7-Eleven has its own 7Charge fast-charging network for EV owners to charge while they shop.
As the survey’s findings highlight the need for a more interconnected approach to EV charging infrastructure, the aspects of going beyond functionality to encompass safety, convenience, and overall user experience is paramount. With states begin to deploy federal funds from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program to build fast-charging stations, the overall EV charging experience being ideal for all EV owners will be dependent on creating charging options that prioritize driver safety and comfort.
