With electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy solutions becoming more focused upon in the clean energy market, Sunrun has reached a new milestone by becoming the first clean energy company to surpass 1 million customers.

As Sunrun firmly establishes its position as the largest developer of home solar systems in the United States (U.S.), the company now accounts for 1 in every 5 rooftop solar installations in the country according to Sunrun.

Moreover, Sunrun’s 1 million customers represent around 3 million people who now have access to clean, affordable energy and backup power capabilities, helping to avoid an estimated 18 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. This is the equivalent of taking 4.3 million gasoline-powered vehicles off the road or shutting down 48 gas-fired power plants for a year.

“The customer-led revolution to greater energy independence for so many Americans is well under way,” stated Sunrun CEO Mary Powell. “The aging and increasingly costly power grid can no longer provide the stability, comfort, and peace of mind that generating and storing your own clean energy can.”

Sunrun has been a key player in enhancing the U.S. solar industry by introducing a subscription-based model that made home solar accessible to families without any upfront costs. The company later expanded its offerings to include energy storage solutions, EV charging, and the nation’s first bidirectional power flow system for the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning.

Sunrun President and Chief Revenue Officer Paul Dickson expressed the company’s future plans stating, “As we deepen our storage-first approach and enhance the customer experience, we’ll introduce more technologies to our customers and build the largest network of smart, controllable, and distributed energy resources that utilities and grid operators will increasingly rely on.”

As Sunrun continues to expand its customer base and introduce new clean energy technologies, the company is set to play an increasingly crucial role in supporting utilities, grid operators, and EV charging by helping to build a more resilient and sustainable energy future for communities across the nation.
