A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Auckland reveals that New Zealand drivers are overwhelmingly positive about the prospect of dynamic wireless charging for electric vehicles (EVs).

The study conducted by doctoral candidate Ramesh Majhi, senior lecturer Prakash Ranjitkar, and senior research fellow Selena Sheng, researched 1,150 current and potential EV owners and found that 93% of respondents expressed optimism about the EV technology and expressed intent to try it in the future regard.

Dynamic Wireless Charging

In detail, dynamic wireless charging technology would allow EVs to charge their batteries while in motion. Although not yet available, this innovation could revolutionize EV charging by making it more convenient and less time-consuming.

Notably, convenience emerged as the most compelling advantage of wireless charging among survey participants. The technology is viewed as a potential complement to existing stationary charging stations, offering a seamless charging experience for EV users.

Interestingly, the study also found that individuals who prioritize sustainability are more inclined to support and use dynamic wireless EV charging. In addition, urban users demonstrated a higher likelihood of adopting the technology compared to their rural counterparts. Furthermore, social influences including the behavior and choices of peers also found to play a role in drivers’ decisions to use the specific EV technology.

Barriers Remain

However, the study also uncovered several concerns among respondents. Issues related to data privacy, electromagnetic radiation, and the potential costs associated with adopting and using wireless in-road technology were raised. As a result, the findings suggest that while there is enthusiasm for the convenience and sustainability aspects of the technology, there are still barriers to its widespread adoption.

Dr. Sheng expressed the importance of the findings stating, “This is where in-road charging lanes will be of benefit, and it’s essential for policymakers to know how best to manage the roll-out of this kind of technology in future and to ensure people’s concerns are understood, and hopefully alleviated.”

While dynamic wireless charging technology is still in development for EVs, the positive reception among New Zealand drivers illustrates a promising aspect of this innovative approach to EV charging. With more research and development invested, it will be vital to address the identified concerns to ensure successful implementation and widespread adoption of this potentially transformative technology, which will ultimately lead to the acceleration of the transition to electric mobility.
