In a meticulously planned real-world range test, Chevrolet engineers pushed the limits of the 2026 Silverado EV Work Truck. They managed to travel 1,059.2 miles in the new Silverado EV on a single charge.

The feat shattered the previous production EV range record held by the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which logged 749 miles just a month prior. The 2026 Silverado EV achieved an average efficiency of 4.9 miles per kilowatt-hour, more than doubling its EPA-estimated range of 493 miles.

How Chevrolet Made the Record-Breaking Run Happen

General Motors stated the Silverado EV used in the test was completely stock, with no hardware or software modifications beyond those that customers can replicate. Engineers optimized performance by maintaining speeds between 20 and 25 mph when safe, minimizing acceleration and braking, and driving solo for most of the test. The truck’s tires were inflated to maximum allowable pressure, the spare tire was removed, and wheel alignment was fine-tuned.

To reduce aerodynamic drag, windshield wipers were set to their lowest functional position, and a tonneau cover was installed. Climate control was kept off despite the July heat, and driving was done under ideal summer temperatures, which GM noted helped maximize battery efficiency.

Controlled Conditions, Real-World Roads

The record attempt took place over a week, using public roads near GM’s Milford Proving Ground and on Belle Isle in Michigan. Forty GM engineers rotated driving duties to maintain consistent conditions. While the test did not follow EPA cycle standards, which are designed to level the playing field for range comparisons, GM stated it showcased the battery’s untapped potential.

“It’s very rarely precise on what you get in the real world, but automakers are only able to advertise what number comes out of that test cycle,” Brinley said.

Stephanie Brinley of S&P Global Mobility notes that such demonstrations highlight what’s possible under specific conditions, even if customers may rarely replicate them.  For GM, it’s a statement of capability and engineering precision, as well as a major PR win in the competitive EV space.
