The Initiative Aims To Increase Scotland’s Public Charge Points To 6,000 By 2026 With Plans For 24,000 More By 2030

The Scottish Government has announced a major investment of over £7 million ($9 million) to expand the country’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network. This funding is distributed across several city councils including Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Highland, Moray, and Dundee.
With aims to encourage greater private sector involvement in developing the EV charging infrastructure, focusing on rural areas, Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop emphasized the importance of this initiative stating, “The scale of our ambition to decarbonise transport cannot be met alone and I expect that our commitment for approximately 24,000 additional public charge points by 2030 will largely be met by the private sector.”
After the unveiling of its most powerful EV charging hub Dundee, Scotland now possesses over 5,600 public EV charging points and is on track to reach 6,000 by 2026. The government projects private sector investment in public EV charging between £40 million ($52 million) and £55 million ($71 million) in Scotland in 2024 alone.
The responses from the funding have been met with positive impressions. Notably, CEO of ChargeUK Vicky Read welcomed the initiative and stated that the organization’s members plan to invest over £6 billion in EV infrastructure across the UK before 2030.
Moreover, Chief Executive of the Aberdeenshire Council Jim Savege highlighted the partnership between Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Moray, and Highland Council areas with enthusiasm for finding a private sector partner to co-invest and work towards net-zero goals across diverse urban and rural communities.
With other recent initiatives including a £10 million investment by the Scottish National Investment Bank in charge point operator FOR EV and the launch of “street cabinet” charging stations, this investment aligns with Scotland’s broader efforts to phase out the need for new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030.
As Scotland invests in its EV charging infrastructure development, this public-private partnership approach will contribute to achieving the country’s climate goals and ensuring convenient charging access for all Scottish EV owners.
