Volkswagen confirmed it may deploy Rivian-derived architecture not just in future EVs but potentially in combustion models as well.

Rivian and Volkswagen’s deepening technology partnership could shape Ford’s future EV strategy as the two automakers expand their joint venture to include broader platform development. Volkswagen confirmed it may deploy Rivian-derived architecture not just in future EVs but potentially in combustion models as well, signaling a wider scope that could influence vehicles Ford is developing with its longtime partner.
Volkswagen’s $5 billion investment and joint venture with Rivian began as a path to co-develop next-generation EV architectures, with VW planning to integrate Rivian’s existing electrical and software platform into its upcoming electric models. But executives now say the system’s flexibility could extend further than initially expected.
Carsten Helbing, co-CEO of the RV Tech venture, said the architecture is “extremely capable” and could support internal combustion applications with additional component work. While VW’s focus remains on EVs, the flexibility leaves the door open for broader adoption across its portfolio, according to Ford Authority.
The joint venture plans to begin testing the new platform by the end of 2025, preparing for a debut in the Volkswagen ID.Every1, an EV slated to launch in 2027. The expanded use case suggests Rivian’s core technology may become more embedded in VW’s long-term strategy than originally signaled.

Ford previously ended its direct collaboration with Rivian, but its ongoing partnership with Volkswagen remains central to its European product roadmap. The two automakers have co-developed multiple models in recent years, and Ford has already confirmed that several upcoming vehicles slated for 2027 are being created “with partners.”
If VW incorporates Rivian-backed architecture more broadly, the shift could flow into Ford programs that rely on shared platforms or joint engineering resources. While neither company has confirmed whether Ford will adopt the new tech, analysts note that VW’s modular strategy historically underpins shared development with partners.
Ford’s next wave of European EVs and electrified models could therefore be influenced by the evolving VW-Rivian ecosystem, particularly as automakers streamline costs and prioritize scalable software-first platforms. The outcome will hinge on how deeply the new architecture is integrated into VW’s global programs in the coming years.
