Rivian and Volkswagen reportedly held a high-stakes meeting in Munich last week as their joint venture faces mounting challenges.

The EV maker’s software, which Volkswagen plans to adapt across its brands, has proven difficult to integrate, delaying the rollout of several upcoming electric models.

The setback comes despite Volkswagen’s $5.8 billion investment in Rivian, intended to accelerate its shift to software-defined vehicles.

Software integration delays slow Volkswagen launches

According to Manager Magazin, Volkswagen’s employees assigned to the joint venture have been sidelined while Rivian prioritizes the launch of its mid-size R2 SUV in 2025. The R2 will debut Rivian’s zonal architecture before it becomes available to Volkswagen brands, EV noted.

This has pushed back key launches, including Audi’s refreshed A4 and Q8 SUVs, now expected in 2028, and indefinitely delayed Porsche’s K1 SUV. Volkswagen’s entry-level ID.1 EV, initially slated for 2027, is also facing uncertainty.

Strategic tensions shape the joint venture’s future

Tensions are reportedly growing between Rivian and Volkswagen over how much freedom the German automaker’s brands should have in customizing the software. Rivian favors a streamlined, uniform system, while Volkswagen’s brands seek more flexibility.

The crisis meeting in Munich brought Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe and software chief Wassym Bensaid together with Volkswagen leadership to reorganize launch plans. Despite these struggles, Rivian’s software business continues to generate strong revenue, with nearly half of its Q2 Software and Services income tied to the Volkswagen partnership.

“About half of the revenue within Software and Services was a result of the Software and Electrical Hardware joint venture we created with Volkswagen Group” Rivian CFO Claire McDonough said.
