Rivian has unveiled its new “Rivian Rewards” referral program that aims to incentivize current Rivian owners to promote the brand and potentially earn significant rewards including the possibility of acquiring a new Rivian electric vehicle (EV) at little to no cost.

According to Rivian, owners of its EVs in the United States (U.S.) can now access a unique referral code through their Rivian account. When this code is used by a new buyer to purchase an EV from Rivian’s “R1 Shop,” the company’s inventory of immediately available EVs, which both the referrer and the buyer are eligible for rewards.

The current offerings include 750 points (equivalent to $750) redeemable in Rivian’s Gear Shop or R1 Shop and 6 months of complimentary charging at Rivian Adventure Network sites with a lifetime limit of three years. 

The standout aspect of the program is the ability to accumulate points towards the purchase of a new Rivian EV. While the company states that points cannot cover the initial $500 deposit, theoretically, an owner could earn enough points to cover the majority of a new EV’s cost. This would require a significant number of successful referrals, but it opens up the possibility of obtaining a “mostly free” Rivian for dedicated brand enthusiasts.

Strategic Timing and Market Impact

Moreover, the introduction of Rivian Rewards comes at a crucial time as it has its eyes set on production targets holding steady at 57,000 units for 2024, matching last year’s output. With the referral program, it could help stimulate sales during a period of flat growth as Rivian is looking ahead to 2026 when it plans to launch its more affordable R2 model. 

Notably, Rivian has indicated that the Rewards program will evolve over time. While the 750-point reward is guaranteed for deliveries through the end of 2024, the company may adjust the reward structure in the future. In addition, Rivian plans to introduce new ways for owners to earn and spend points as the program develops.

As an added incentive, Rivian will invite the first 100 owners who achieve 25 qualifying referrals to a special “Rivian Adventure Weekend” planned for next year.

It should be noted that Tesla recently revived its referral program to leverage enthusiastic buyers as brand ambassadors with new buyers getting a $1,000 discount. With this in mind, Rivian’s move mirrors the successful strategies employed by them.

In the increasingly competitive EV market, cultivating a dedicated fan base and encouraging word-of-mouth marketing could prove crucial for Rivian’s long-term success.
