Rivian has begun production of its smaller, more affordable R2 SUV, marking a critical step toward scaling volume and improving profitability.

Customer deliveries are expected later this spring, as the company positions the R2 to compete directly with mainstream EVs and expand beyond its premium R1 lineup.

Rivian begins R2 production as deliveries near

The Rivian R2 has officially entered production, with early customer configurations expected to open in June. Rivian is targeting initial deliveries later this spring, signaling a faster rollout timeline than many previous EV launches, according to Reuters.

The R2 is central to Rivian’s growth strategy, aimed at competing with high-volume models like the Tesla Model Y. CFO Claire McDonough noted strong early reservation interest, though exact figures were not disclosed.

Pricing starts at $57,990 for the launch variant, with lower-cost trims planned, including a $48,490 version in 2027 and a targeted $45,000 entry model by late 2027—significantly expanding Rivian’s addressable market.

Cost reductions and scale key to profitability push

Rivian is relying on aggressive cost-cutting measures to make the R2 viable at scale. Compared to the R1 lineup, the R2 is expected to cost less than half as much to build once production stabilizes in 2027.

Key savings come from engineering simplification, including die casting (32% cost reduction), a redesigned drive unit (25% reduction), and a simplified suspension system (72% reduction). Despite this, Rivian expects the R2 to initially pressure margins before contributing to profitability.

The company aims to achieve positive automotive gross margins by the end of 2026, supported by rising R2 output and efficiency improvements across its broader lineup.

Beyond vehicle sales, the R2 also plays a role in Rivian’s autonomy ambitions. The company has introduced a driver-assistance package and is developing in-house chips, while partnering with Uber on a robotaxi initiative tied to the R2 platform.

As Rivian scales production, supply chain stability remains a key risk, with executives closely monitoring suppliers to avoid disruptions during ramp-up.
