Rivian Shifts Focus On R3X To Launch Ahead Base R3 Model

In recent developments in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has confirmed that the company’s R3X model will hit the market before the standard R3 model.

In a recent interview with The Verge, Scaringe revealed that the R3X will be the first trim of the R3 platform to launch. While no specific timeline was provided, he indicated that both R3 models would arrive “as soon as we possibly can” following the introduction of the Rivian R2 model, which is aimed to start production in 2026.

The R3 and R3X, revealed alongside the R2 earlier this year, are compact hatchbacks built on the same platform as their larger SUV sibling. Measuring around 15 inches shorter than the R2, these models aim to revitalize the small car segment in the United States (U.S.) EV market. Rivian is targeting a sub-$45,000 starting price for the base R3 though the performance-oriented R3X is expected to command a premium.

Both R3 trims will share notable components with the R2 including battery packs and powertrain options ranging from single to tri-motor configurations. The R3X, in particular, is confirmed to feature a standard tri-motor setup.

Rivian’s EV Strategy

This announcement arrives after Rivian’s recent partnership with Volkswagen. Under the partnership, Volkswagen will invest up to $5 billion in Rivian. It will also grant Volkswagen access to Rivian’s electrical architecture and software expertise. In return, this influx of capital is expected to support Rivian’s product roadmap including the development and production of the R2 and R3 models.

Furthermore, Rivian’s upcoming R2 model have surpassed 100,000 units for pre-orders and continue to climb after four months since its unveiling. With production of the R2 set to start in Rivian’s Illinois plant in 2026, the company’s strategic moves are making progress.

As Rivian continues to generate buzz with its upcoming EV models, the EV market eagerly awaits more details on the R3X and its standard R3 counterpart in the company’s lineup.
