The Rivian R2 is expected to be the company’s first mass-market vehicle.

Rivian has released a video offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the R2’s vehicle design studio, which plays a key part in the development of the upcoming electric compact crossover.
The R2 is Rivian’s first mass market vehicle, and it is aimed at challenging the Tesla Model Y with its $45,000 MSRP. Tesla proved that there is ample demand for premium all-electric crossovers, as the Model Y became the world’s best-selling car by volume in both 2023 and 2024.
The video showcases Rivian’s in-house approach, from the studio where the R2’s design was conceived to the powertrain lab developing its next-generation Maximus motor. The video also showcased the electrical lab crafting the software and hardware stack of the R2.
Unlike the R1T and R1S, the R2 is built on Rivian’s Midsize Platform (MSP), which supports over 300 miles of range, 10-80% charging in under 30 minutes, and various motor configurations. Rivian’s Maximus motor plays a huge role in the R2’s potential success, as it is 40% more power-dense compared to the R1T and R1S’ Enduro motor. It is also cheaper to produce.

While Rivian’s R1 vehicles are focused on North America, the R2 has global aspirations. According to a CarBuzz report, Rivian plans to sell the R2 in Europe after its release in North America. Other international markets are expected to follow. The same is true for other upcoming vehicles like the R3 and R3X.
Similar to Tesla, Rivian is putting a lot of effort into making the R2 and its components in-house. This is true for the R2’s software and hardware stack, which is being developed internally and even shared with partners like Volkswagen. However, Rivian is relying on LG Energy Solution for the R2’s 4695 battery cells.
EV.com recognizes Rivian’s design studio video as a critical step in building anticipation for the R2’s 2026 launch. You can explore the best offers on Rivian and other electric vehicles we have on our listings here.
